Getting Back Up After a Fall: Resilience Is Not Optional

Published on • By Frédéric Damato

Why We're All Wired to Bounce Back

Tired of everyone talking about resilience? Me too! Resilience this, resilience that… As if it were a superpower reserved for some mental elite from another galaxy.

🪰 Spoiler alert: it's much simpler — and infinitely more universal — than that.

Yes, as a mental coach it's my job to work on resilience… But let's call a spade a spade!

We wave it like a magic wand to explain that someone climbed back up, reached their goals after an initial failure. “That person is so resilient!”

And what if I told you that not only is this not an extraordinary feat… but it's the most natural thing in the world?

Since the dawn of time, humans get back up. It's even what we do best. Famine, war, disease, breakups, lumbago: we fall, grumble a bit, then move on. There is a quiet force in each of us that whispers, “Come on, let's go again.”

A baby falls 200 times before learning to walk. No baby ever said, “Actually, I'm going to crawl for the rest of my life.”

👉 Resilience is proportional to the intensity of the fall, not to the number of likes it gets.

🌍 Nature shows us: resilience is everywhere

Even nature is resilient (and you don't have to be a “super-eco” to see it). The Earth was here long before us. It will be here long after. It's not our bamboo Tupperware that will save it… but its own capacity to regenerate, slowly, powerfully, indifferently.

🇩🇪 Germany was already sorting its waste in 1996. 🇫🇷 France in 2025 is still hesitating between the yellow bin and… the bins of doubt.

A spider loses a leg? It keeps spinning its web. A strained muscle rebuilds itself. A rejected idea eventually finds its way.

Resilience isn't an exceptional trait: it's a vital movement. It's what keeps the world standing. It's embedded in life itself.

🧠 You're already resilient, even if you don't know it

👉 So if you're resilient (and you are), you can have confidence in yourself.

You've weathered storms, Wednesdays without a snack, breakups, doubts, failures. And yet you're still here.

Every time you've gotten back up — even if only slightly bent over — you've practiced resilience.

🧬 Neuroscience confirms it: the brain is plastic. It learns, heals, and reprograms. Resilience runs through the circuits of memory, emotion, and attention. It's not magic. It's like learning to ride a bike: you fall, you get up. You try again. Eventually you stay upright.

💪 Stop doubting your ability to bounce back

Let's stop worshipping resilience as an exception. It's the rule! Humanity stands because it has always gotten back up. And you will too.

“Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” — Samuel Beckett
