Why do a mental skills assessment?

Most athletes know their physical strengths. They know where they stand technically, tactically and athletically. They analyze performances, track statistics and are constantly looking to improve. But one essential question often goes unanswered:

So, where does your mental game really stand today?

However, when two athletes have similar physical and technical levels, it's often the mental side that makes the difference. Confidence, stress management, concentration, emotional control and the ability to bounce back after a setback directly influence performance quality.

These qualities, which we call mental skills, can be developed and trained just like physical or technical abilities.

"As a mental coach, I have been using this kind of assessment for several years in my work. That's why I created the Mental Olympique mental skills assessment: a simple, structured and accessible tool that helps me better understand the mental functioning of the athletes I work with... and that can also help you better understand yourself."

The aim is not to judge your mental state, but to give you a reliable starting point to reflect on how you operate and to guide your development.

1. Take a clear snapshot of your mental game

Before you can decide where to go, you need to know where you're starting from. Just as a coach regularly performs a physical or technical assessment, it's equally useful to review your mental functioning. This assessment gives you a snapshot of your main mental skills: confidence, commitment, concentration, stress management, emotional control, resilience, adaptability and more.

The goal is not to label or judge you. It's simply to better understand your mental profile at a given moment so you have a solid foundation for progress.

2. Understand what truly influences your performance

Do you sometimes feel you're worth more than you show in competition?

Do you do great in training but perform much worse on the day?

Do you lack consistency despite having a high level?

These situations often stem from certain mental mechanisms.

The assessment helps identify the skills that may currently limit the expression of your potential. Putting words to these mechanisms is already a first step toward change. Understanding how you operate often turns a vague difficulty into a concrete training objective.

3. Guide your progress effectively

Many athletes say they want to "work on their mental game." But what exactly should they work on?

Without clear markers, it's easy to spend time on exercises that don't address your priority needs. This assessment identifies the skills that will likely have the biggest impact on your progress. You can then focus your efforts on areas that will help you build confidence, handle pressure better, strengthen concentration or approach competitions with greater calm. In short, you move forward with a clear direction rather than at random.

4. Get to know yourself better, whatever your level

Whether you're a recreational athlete, a regular competitor, a young athlete in training or an elite performer, better understanding your mental functioning is a real advantage. The mental game isn't reserved for the elite — it accompanies every athlete at every training session, every competition and every stage of development. This assessment helps you take a step back on how you react to pressure, to goals, to mistakes, to victories as well as to setbacks.

Knowing yourself better also means understanding the situations where you perform at your best… and those where you can still improve.

5. Turn self-knowledge into lasting opportunities for improvement

Self-knowledge only has value if it leads to action. The Mental Olympique assessment I offer isn't meant to tell you whether you're "good" or "bad" mentally. It highlights concrete development pathways.

Like physical or technical qualities, mental skills evolve through appropriate training, regular practice and better self-understanding. The more you know how you operate, the better you can put effective strategies in place to gain confidence, manage your emotions, stay focused in key moments and build more consistent performances over time.

The mental game can be trained, too

Physical performance is easy to measure. We analyze statistics and often record technique.

But how many athletes actually take the time to assess their mental functioning?

Yet when pressure rises, it's often mental skills that allow you to stay clear-headed, make the right decisions and fully express your potential.

It was precisely with this in mind that I developed the Mental Olympique mental skills assessment. I wanted a tool useful both for my work as a mental coach and for athletes themselves, so they could better understand how they function and get an initial insight before, during or even without formal coaching.

The assessment gives you a snapshot of your mental functioning at a given moment. It provides insight into your main mental skills, highlights your strengths and identifies areas that could be further developed to support your progress.

In a few minutes, you get a clear, structured and personalized view of your mental profile. Whether your goal is to build confidence, better manage stress, strengthen concentration or simply better understand yourself, this assessment is an excellent starting point.

I hope this tool encourages you to go further, explore your potential and realize that, like physical or technical skills, the mental can also be developed.

Because knowing yourself better is often the first step to performing better.
