Parents play a decisive role. Their presence is an indispensable support, but even with the best intentions it can also become a source of pressure. In this fragile balance, my role as a mental performance coach is very specific: to support the athlete in their journey toward autonomy, while helping parents find their proper place.
That is why, for several years, I have developed a specific offer: mental training sessions dedicated to parents, available in person in Rennes or remotely.
My goal: the athlete's autonomy
The primary mission of a mental performance coach is to enable the athlete to become autonomous. My greatest satisfaction is not providing ready-made solutions, but giving practical tools so the athlete:
- can manage their emotions and thoughts,
- build their plan step by step,
- make progress with clarity and confidence,
- and become able to face the challenges of a sporting career on their own.
But this autonomy can only fully flourish within a solid and balanced family environment. That's where supporting parents can be essential.
Parents: first coaches, sometimes despite themselves
Parents experience the emotional rollercoaster of competitive sport: pride in victory, the pain of defeat, and daily sacrifices. They are the first coaches, directly or implicitly, and their attitude profoundly influences their child's motivation, confidence and balance.
You may already have lived it: the car ride home after a competition is sometimes an emotionally difficult moment to manage, both for parents and for the athlete.
The role of parents is far from simple. Emotions can spill over, expectations can become too heavy, and communication with the coach or the young athlete can become strained. In these situations, the mental performance coach can help smooth interactions and provide support.
Mental training sessions for parents
The parents' mental training sessions meet a specific need: to support families so the parental role remains a positive lever rather than a brake, and to help parents fulfil their role with greater peace of mind.
These support sessions are designed to:
- Acknowledge and regulate the parents' emotions in response to their child's sporting challenges.
- Support without overloading: find the right balance between encouragement and pressure.
- Adopt an emotional neutrality that reassures the young athlete.
- Improve communication with the coach and the wider support network.
- Create a protective and coherent family environment, essential for performance and well-being.
These sessions aim to be real support for families, and sometimes for coaches as well, as they ease tensions and clarify everyone's roles.
The mental performance coach, a discreet pivot
Supporting parents also means:
- facilitating communication between the coach, the athlete and the family,
- clarifying roles and expectations to avoid misunderstandings,
- preserving a healthy environment that allows the young athlete to progress without excessive pressure.
The mental coach acts as a discreet pivot, ensuring a balanced relationship between all stakeholders.
Expertise from high performance sport
My approach is based on experience working with high-level athletes and across several Olympic Games. I know how intensely parents live this journey and I provide them with concrete tools and reliable reference points to better support their child.
At the same time, I continually work on myself. A mental performance coach must evolve, improve and refine their practice to offer ever more accurate and effective support.
In conclusion
Parents are an essential link in sporting success. Their support can be a powerful lever… or a weight that's hard to carry if emotions take over.
Through the parents' mental training sessions, I help them to:
- understand their role,
- manage their emotions,
- support without pressure,
- and create an environment where the young athlete can thrive and perform.
By working together – parents, athlete, coach, staff and mental performance coach – we can maximize the chances of a sustainable performance and a solid career while preserving everyone's balance.
