My son Marius started badminton late compared to other competitors at his level, and he wasn't born into a badminton family the way most of them were. His path is unusual — and that makes it all the more deserving.
When he left for Rennes at 16 to keep progressing, I decided, with his father's support, to give him every possible chance. It quickly became clear to us that an athlete can't do without quality mental coaching.
Not knowing him at first, but convinced by his skills, we chose to work with Frédéric Damato. That collaboration, which started in 2019, continued intensively and regularly until 2025. Frédéric became a pillar, going well beyond our expectations.
Far more than a mental performance coach, he helped build out Marius's team, including the smart choice of a physical preparation coach. He guided us through essential decisions: academy choice, cryotherapy, new training techniques, nutrition. He quickly became our point of reference, and I even formally asked Frédéric to take on the role of manager.
Our exchanges were always fluid and enriching. I gave Frédéric complete trust — which isn't in my nature, because I'm a very demanding person who always wants the best. I was never disappointed.
The road to Marius's autonomy wasn't simple, but again, Frédéric showed delicacy and honesty by stepping back on his own when he judged that his protégé was mature enough to fly on his own.
Frédéric remains close to us today. We've become friends, and he continues to follow Marius's progress. I know I can always count on him.
